I hope you are having a good week.  It was great to see you all at Open House last week.  I hope you enjoyed seeing all of your child's work.  The students have been busy workers in first grade.  Here is an update on what we've been working on...

Reading: This week the students heard different versions of Titch stories and we talked about character traits.  We are also reading "Hattie and the Fox" and "Chicken Licken" and working on quotation marks and speech bubbles.  Next week we will do reader's theater with the story.

Writing: We continue to work on answering questions in complete sentences.  Also, we worked on adding reasons and details to our writing.  The students wrote about their favorite book.

Spelling: We have assessed long a and are now working on long i.  Practicing word families at home will be good practice as the students now have to distinguish between long and short vowels on the phonics checks.  It's getting harder...

Math: The students are busy learning about place value, greater than and less than and solving addition problems.

Science: The students have learned about penguins.  Have your child tell you a few facts.

Social Studies: Next week we will begin a biography unit.  We will be making a timeline and learning about many famous Americans. (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Martin Luther King Jr.)
