Language Arts:
Our comprehension focus has been Picture-it and Inferring with text. Picture-it involves drawing or discussing thoughts about the story and how it relates to the students personal lives. A reader infers when he/she is reading to help create meaning that is not stated in the text. We practiced these strategies with the stories “Space Pup,” “Boots for Beth” and “Ten Dogs in the Window.”

Word Wall Words:
what, down, new, saw, after, some, with, went, any, boy

Grammar:
Using capital letters and punctuation correctly has been our focus.

Phonics:
We’ve been concentrating on spelling with various short u word families such as mug, duck, trunk and drum. So far, we have practiced short a, o, i, and u vowels.  Soon the students will take a Phonics Check covering all these vowels.

Math:
Everyday Mathematics has included concepts such as telling time to the half hour, solving frames and arrows problems and counting dimes, nickels, and pennies. The students were assessed over these and other concepts in unit 3.  Unit 4 will be on measurement and basic facts.  If your child hasn’t yet, please return the bag of dominoes.

Science/Social Studies:

In science we have learned about the different layers of the earth and the continents. We continue to learn about where rocks are found, how rocks are removed from our earth and volcanoes. The students have studies their rocks to investigate texture, weight, luster, hardness and color.  Thank you for sending in the rock collections.  We are now finished with them.  Native American Tribes has been our unit of study in Social Studies. We have been learning many interesting facts about the Sioux, Chinook, Wampanoag and Pueblo Indians.

During Citizenship we have discussed respecting substitute teachers, teaching assistants and other adults in the building. Our “cool tool” this week was using good manners by saying “Thank you.”

News from 1G:

I would like to thank you for coming to conferences. It was nice to speak to each one of you about the progress your child is making this year. I would also like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy the time off with your loved ones.

The students will be making a holiday presentation about a holiday your family celebrates.  Look for a note with details to come home after the Thanksgiving holiday.

As students run low/out of supplies, I will send a note home with your child letting you know what new supplies are needed.  It is usually pencils, glue sticks and or dry erase markers.  Thank you in advance for replenishing the supplies as your child needs them.

Happy Thanksgiving!
