Brrr!!!!  I hope you are staying warm with this cold winter weather.  We are working on our snow unit although we don't have any snow to look at or play in....maybe we'll eventually get some.  Although it is nice not having to deal with all that comes with a snowfall.  Have a good week.  I'll see your smiling student Tuesday morning.

Language Arts:
This past week we read different stories that described different types of houses around the world. The students worked on making connections with these stories and will be displaying some of their work during open house.

Word Wall Words:

Jump, talk, when, where, quit

Phonics:

In phonics we have finished up the short vowels and are starting to work on long vowel sound of A with the CVCE pattern. We have also started to discuss the blend (bl and sl). We will be working on the long vowels and blends over the next few months.

Writing:

For writing we have continued to work on using a four square organizer to help us write a paragraph. The students wrote about their winter break giving reasons and details why it was so great. Next week we will use a four square to write about if winter is our favorite season or not. Please discuss this topic with your child and come up with reasons why it is/isn't your child's favorite season.  We will continue to work on personal narrative and four square writing throughout the next few weeks. We have also been working on composing several pieces of work for open house.

Math-

In math we have continue to work on measurement. We used paper clips and unfix cubes to estimate and find the actual measurement of various items in the classroom. We also worked on problem solving by measuring different items with unfix cubes to see if they would fit in a school box. We will finish up this unit this week.

Science/Social Studies:

In science we have been reading poems and stories during the snow unit. The students have enjoyed listening to snow stories and telling why they like snow, how to build a snowman and describing their snow suit.

In preparation for Open House, we have started working on a “House Unit”. We will be discussing the different varieties of houses, why people live in certain types of homes, homes around the world and creating a home of our dreams.  You will get to see all of their hard work at Open House.

100's Day is coming up.  Please look for notes coming home soon.  I will also send a note soon regarding Valentine's Day and procedures for passing out valentines.

We go outside most days for recess.  Please make sure your child dresses for the weather.  If they have a hat, gloves, scarf...at school I do ask them to wear their winter items to recess.
